Backstory and Motivation
Armin Arlert, a central character in "Attack on Titan," is known for his intelligence, strategic mind, and unwavering loyalty to his friends. Armin's backstory is deeply intertwined with his childhood in Shiganshina District, where he grew up alongside his best friends, Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman. From a young age, Armin was fascinated by the world beyond the Walls, sparked by a book his grandfather secretly owned, which detailed the wonders and vastness of the outside world. This curiosity and desire for freedom became a fundamental part of his character.
One of the most significant events in Armin's past was the fall of Wall Maria, which marked the beginning of his journey. At the age of 10, he witnessed the brutal destruction of his hometown by the Titans, resulting in the loss of his grandfather and many others. This traumatic event instilled in him a profound fear of the Titans but also a determination to fight against them to protect humanity and discover the truth about the world.
Armin's relationship with Eren and Mikasa is a cornerstone of his development. Their friendship provides him with emotional support and motivation. Despite his self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy, Armin's strategic thinking often proves invaluable, earning him the trust and respect of his peers. His bond with Eren, in particular, fuels his resolve, as he is inspired by Eren's passion and drive to eradicate the Titans.
A pivotal moment in Armin's life occurs during the battle of Shiganshina, where he sacrifices himself to enable Eren and the others to defeat the Colossal Titan. Although he is severely injured, Levi chooses to save Armin by using the Titan serum, allowing him to transform into a Titan and consume Bertholdt, thus inheriting the power of the Colossal Titan. This event is a turning point, as it burdens Armin with the weight of responsibility and the memories of Bertholdt, adding complexity to his character.
Armin's motivations are driven by a desire for freedom and peace, as well as a commitment to his friends and the hope of uncovering the truth about the Titans and the world. His past experiences of loss and survival have shaped him into a compassionate and thoughtful leader, often prioritizing diplomacy and understanding over violence. As the story progresses, Armin's character arc involves him grappling with the moral complexities of war and leadership, striving to balance his ideals with the harsh realities of their world. Ultimately, Armin's journey is one of growth, courage, and the pursuit of a brighter future for humanity.
